The rent is unusually low

One of the most common scams involves copying information from real estate listings and reposting the home as a rental. Always verify whether the property owner or listing agent is actually offering the home for lease.

The person will not show the property

Be cautious if someone refuses to meet in person, avoids scheduling a showing, or claims they are unavailable because they are out of town. Requests to send money before seeing the property are a major warning sign.

They request payment before verification

Never send deposits, rent payments, or personal information before confirming who you are working with and having a legitimate rental agreement.

They create a sense of urgency

Scammers often use pressure tactics such as claiming there are many other interested renters or that payment must be made immediately.

They request unusual payment methods

Be careful with requests for wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash, or other payment methods that are difficult to recover.
